Below you will find our "Map" for rank progression through our system. Please note that these descriptions are a minimum requirements list of skills, not a total list of techniques taught, nor is it a complete showing of our evaluation process for each individual in our system. 10th Kyu (White) All new students to our system start out at 10th Kyu (white). It signifies the beginning of a new journey in martial arts. 9th & 8th Kyu (Gold) Fundamental and effective self defense skills including introductory skills from Karate, Aikido, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu, as well as basic conditioning. 1. Required reading - "Maxims for the Trainee" by Gichin Funakoshin 2. Postures - Economic Base / Fore Balance (basic fighting posture), Saunchin, Front 3. Steps - Shuffle step (forward and backward), swing step, cross step, & out step 4. Knee strike - Slant / Angle, Round, Ram 5. Elbow strikes - Slant, Hooking, Side, and Back (mid and head level) 6. Kicks - (all aimed toward opponents knee) Side, Slant Front, and Thai Round 7. Strikes - Reverse Punch, Jab, and Palm Heel 8. Blocks - (Hard Style) Cross, Rising, Down, Outer Forearm, Inner Forearm 9. Falls - Back Fall and Side Fall (on both sides) 10. Judo - Basic cross grip, O-goshi 11. Aikido - Movements 1 through 4 of "The Walk", Wrist Releases 1 and 2 12. Jiu Jitsu - Basic Bridging (both sides), Mount Position, Side Mount, & Guard Position (closed) 13. Conditioning - 25 Push ups, 50 crunches, 10 Floor sweepers 7th & 6th Kyu (Green) Improve fundamentals and increase development of fighting concepts through sparring 1. Required reading - "Maxims for the Trainee" by Gichin Funakoshin 2. Postures - Straddle ( Not an actual posture but a step; however, for learning sake it will be classified as a posture), Front Cat, & Back Stalk 3. Steps - Skip, Spin, Lunge, & Forward Pump 4. Knee strikes - Pump, Bouncing, & Upward 5. Elbow strikes - Lunging, Spinning (high & low), Upper, & Over 6. Kicks - (All mid-range) Slant Front, Round House, Side, Back, Front Heel 7. Strikes - Upset Punch, Hook Punch, Body Jab, Lead Backfist 8. Blocks - (Hard Style) Scissor, Shield, Check Hand, (soft Style) Palm Heel Block 9. Falls - Forward Roll, Forward Breakfall, Back Roll 10. Judo - Tai Otoshi, Osoto Gari, the Drop 11. Aikido - Movements 5 through 8 of "The Walk", Wrist Releases 3 & 4, Movements 1 & 2 12. Jiu Jitsu - Rear Naked Choke, Framing, Basic Guard escape 13. Conditioning - 45 Push ups, 70 crunches, 15 Floor sweepers 5th & 4th Kyu (Blue) Develop a sense of assertive action in a crisis situation. Shows an intermediate level of understanding of techniques and improved fighting concepts through sparring. 1. Required reading - "The Dao of Jeet Kune Do" by Bruce Lee 2. Posture & Movement - Side Cat Posture, Dempsey Dip, Bob and Weave, Ducking 3. Steps - Swing on one foot, Spin, 1/4 Step, Scissor Pivot, X Step, Circle Stepping 4. Knee strikes - Combinations (Showing power) 5. Elbow strikes - Combinations, Combinations with knees (All showing power) 6. Kicks - (All developing toward head level) Crescent (in to out & out to in), Spinning Hook, Kicking combinations (showing proper sense of distance & direction) 7. Strikes - Backfist variations, Vertical Fist, Cross, Body Hooks, Jab variations, Ridge Hand, Knife Hand 8. Blocks - Fishtail, Bow Wrist, Show understanding of the three blocking perimeters with both hard & soft styles 9. Falls - Show mastery of all falls, should be able to take falls from full power throws 10. Judo - Ippon Seoinage, Ouchi Gari 11. Aikido - The full movement of "The Walk", All basic Wrist Releases, Movements 1 through 5, Wrist locks from lapel / shirt grabs 12. Jiu Jitsu - Basic Arm Bar, variations on entering into the Arm Bar, Head Lock Releases 13. Conditioning - 60 Pushups, 90 crunches, 20 Floor sweepers 3rd, 2nd, & 1st Kyu (Brown) Show an ability to control crisis situations. Shows an advanced level of understanding of proper fundamental fighting concepts through sparring. 1. Required reading - "Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi 2. Concepts - At these levels, one must show an understanding of techniques & strategy in combat. All strikes must show power. Individuality will also become more important, based on natural tendencies and body design of the student (male, female, heavy, light, tall, short, etc.) 3. Instruction - Must start teaching beginner level students, as well as have the ability to identify the symptoms and causes of movement issues. Must also develop proper communicative skills for instruction. 4. Workshops - Special workshop attendance will be required of all Brown Belt students (both inside & outside of the school). 5. Sparring - Sparring at full speed with the ability to demonstrate control, focus, continuity of movement, creativity, & common sense. 6. Kicks - Advanced Hook Kick variations, Flying Kicks, rising from the floor with kicks, kicking from tight in-fighting distances 7. Strikes - Approach all strikes from various starting positions 8. Judo - Ippon Seoinage, Ouchi Gari 9. Aikido - Movements 6 through 17 10. Jiu Jitsu - Advanced Guard positions, Sweeps from the Guard, lapel Chokes from the Guard 11. Conditioning - 90 Pushups, 120 crunches, 30 Floor sweepers Shodan (1st Black) Aspire to clarity and object consciousness. 1. Required reading - "Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi 2. Seasoning - At this level the student must have a minimum of 9 months of training at the 1st Kyu (Brown Belt) level. Must also show ability to lead reviews for students. 3. Instruction - Must start teaching to Brown belt level students. Must also develop advanced communicative skills for instruction towards multiple personality and experiential types. 4. Workshops - Special workshop attendance will be required of all Brown Belt students (both inside & outside of the school). 5. Sparring - Demonstrate the ability to develop appropriate strategies to combat multiple fighting types & styles dependent on size, gender, & style of opponent). 6. Kicks and Strikes - All Kicks and strikes must be developed on both sides. Specialized techniques will be taught at Brown and Black Belt levels, for they require a higher level of flexibility, dexterity, and timing. 7. Judo - Ippon Seoinage, Ouchi Gari 8. Aikido - Advanced variations of wrist locks, arm locks, & throws 9. Jiu Jitsu- Advanced arm, leg, wrist, shoulder, and ankle locks from various positions and entries. Advanced Chokes Lapel & No-Gi) 10. Conditioning - 100 Push ups, 150 crunches, 40 Floor sweepers, advanced levels of flexibility Shodan No Sensei (Black Belt Instructor) Aspire to clarity and object consciousness. 1. Required reading - "Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi 2. Seasoning - At this level the student must have a minimum of 12 months of training at the Shodan (Black Belt) level. Must also show ability to lead reviews and classes for advanced (Brown Belt) students. 3. Instruction - Must show ability to clearly instruct advanced techniques and concepts to Brown belt level students. Must also show the ability to visually and tactilely recognize discrepancies in movement, balance, and technique. Must also show the ability to recognize tendencies and characteristics of students in a meaningful enough way as to help guide them into the areas of self defense best suited for their body type and personality. 4. Workshops - Special workshop attendance will be required of all Black Belt students (both inside & outside of the school). 5. Sparring - Demonstrate the ability guide others to develop appropriate strategies to combat multiple fighting types & styles dependent on size, gender, & style of opponent). 6. Kicks and Strikes - All Kicks and strikes must be developed on both sides. Specialized techniques will be taught at Brown and Black Belt levels, for they require a higher level of flexibility, dexterity, and timing. 7. Outside advancement - Must officially earn a minimum of Blue Belt (or equivalent) advancement in one (or more) of the other disciplines from Judo, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, Kung Fu (Wu Shu), and/ or Muay Thai. This can be achieved either from outside schools or from certified instructors inside our school 8. Conditioning - 100 Push ups, 150 crunches, 40 Floor sweepers, advanced levels of flexibility
